Every Central Government department is committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, by reducing carbon emissions across their estate and scaling up the transition to renewable energy.

Several departments have outlined their own roadmaps to becoming more resilient and sustainable in the face of the challenge presented by climate change:

  • Ministry of Defence - Plans to contribute to the UK’s net zero 2050 target by reducing emissions and scaling up transition to renewables. Project Prometheus has been introduced to invest in renewable energy solutions across the Army.

  • Ministry of Justice - HM Prison Service will be redesigned with emission savings in mind, using heat pumps solar panels and LED lighting to cut carbon emissions by at least 85% compared to prisons already under construction.

  • Department for Transport - Multi-million pound funding has been given to trials of solar used in conjunction with railways, roads and footways.

  • Department for Education - Established a Sustainability and Climate Change Unit to focus on reaching net zero by 2050; becoming resilient to Climate Change; delivering a better environment for future generations; and ensuring citizens are connected to nature.

Central Government has a very diverse estate, encompassing offices, accommodation, training facilities, and more. This means there’s also lots of diversity in its energy requirements. At the same time, many sites have underutilised real estate – pockets of land that could be the ideal location for onsite renewable energy generation, like a solar PV installation or battery storage asset.

Centrica Business Solutions can help your department to develop a sustainable, growth-oriented energy strategy that enables you to respond quickly to new opportunities and stakeholder expectations of environmental responsibility. We’ll help you navigate the options that will drive maximum value from your real estate and reduce your overall energy bill – cost savings that can be reinvested into further improvements to government infrastructure.
