Boston Scientific Limited save costs and reduce CO2 by 1,850 tonnes through their Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units
The Challenge
Boston Scientific are a leading innovator of medical solutions that improve the health of patients around the world. The company began in 1979 and they continue to deliver innovation to meet patient needs around the world and deliver economic value to their customers. The plant in Galway has undergone significant expansion over the years and now extends to over 35,000 square metres.
The Solution
Centrica Business Solutions designed, installed and commissioned a 1.2 MW CHP solution. This comprised an MTU gen-set complete with all aux plant, housed within an outdoor custom-built plantroom. This unit is operated and maintained under a long-term, maintenance contract. Due to success of the first CHP unit a second 1.2MW containerised CHP solution was designed, installed and commissioned, as part of a trigeneration system, consisting of an MTU/Rolls Royce CHP engine, combined with an absorption chiller, to deliver electricity, heat and chilled water for Boston Scientific.
